Writers News/Writing Magazine - Lots of market news, articles on writing and competitions (some free to subscribers.)
Mslexia - aimed specifically at women writers. Lots of articles, market news and competitions, plus a yearly poetry competition.
The New Writer - Another writing magazine with interesting articles, news on markets and comps and their own prestigious writing competition

Sci-Talk - absolutely brilliant resource for any writer wanting to write from a scientfic angle. You can email boffins and ask direct questions about their areas of expertise.
AskJeeves - Splendid resource for writers researching facts for their stories/novels
Wikipedia - User edited Encyclopedia (so facts are sometimes wrong) but still a good resource
Ask Oxford - Huge resource dedicated to history, language, quotes and word games.
Windows Live Local - Can't afford to go out and research towns and cities? This excellent resource gives a very good idea of the lie of the land, clearly showing rural/urban areas in 'real time'.
Reverse Dictionary - Very interesting and fun site. You put in a concept, for example 'end of the world' and it tells you all the different words related to the concept. Great for those days when you're stuck for words. Also helpful for crossword fans
Behind the name - Fascinating site, not just for writers looking for appropriate names for their characters, but also for anyone interested in the etymology of first names.
Language to Language - For when you need that foreign word to impress/bewilder your readers!
Latin - As above and when you want to feel even more erudite.
Bartelby - Famous and infamous quotes
Life in Elizabethan England - Excellent compendium of all things Elizabethan for writers and students of Tudor times. Also featured in my 'Other Interests' page.
Rum and Monkey Name Generator - Dozens of different name generators. Some humorous, some serious, some downright strange.
Forums and Workshops
Bibliophilia.org - A very new writers' site and forum, but the owner, Toni, is very keen and enthusiastic, so do give him your support and help turn this into a good resource for writers.
UK Authors - writers forum and showcase site. Small yearly charge (£5) but you can browse for free for one month.
Critters Bar - Nice new home to ex-East of the Webbers, with a nice mixture of professional, intermediate and amateur writers. To join, send email to site administrator at register@crittersbar.com
Writers' Dock - Site set up by Get Writing refugees. Lively discussion, writing tips and general support for lonely writers.
Speculations - The Rumour Mill - Lively site dedicated to writers of speculative fiction. Lots of links to resources and mutual support from other writers.
Cafe Doom - Lively forum, mostly dedicated to horror/sci-fi/fantasy, but welcoming to all writers.
Write Words - Upmarket writers' forum, small yearly charge that keeps out the trouble makers, but some illuminaries on its members' list.
Lulu Wiki - A site for Lulu.com users to promote their books and meet other lulu authors.
